Rosie Benn is a transdisciplinary artist based in Vienna. Her practice is inspired by dialogical aesthetics and queer ecologies. Her work explores environmental discourses through non-linear narratives and applies the technique of collage to various media. In 2020 Rosie completed her MA in Art & Science at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her artistic research project limen was supported by the Ministry of Science, Research and Education Austria, the work of ethnographic fiction and video poem explored interspecies relations in biocyclic-vegan agriculture. Food production, eating and the so-called waste from these activities call into question the boundary between matter and the living. It is at these crosspoints that the inquiry of Rosie’s research is situated. Experimentation and poetic sense-making are vital to the process, daydreaming and humour are seen as valid resources in negating capitalist, imperial modes of living and world-making. Rooted with an interest in the everyday implications of such modes of being, Rosie collaborates or dwells with activist, scientific groups and situated stakeholders that are engaged in practices of interspecies care.
Rosie currently works with philosopher Florian Heinze on a multimedia chapter within the publication Animated Wor(l)ds; Language and Relationality for Multispecies Kinship, editors Eva Spiegelhofer (Anthropocene Network) and Elizabeth Tavella (Ecozon@). In this collaboration Rosie and Florian will draw on their previous work within critical animal studies by further exploring a post-anthropocentric understanding of liminal beings within vegan agriculture. Aspects of solidarity as well as interspecies conflicts will be reflected in light of feminist care theory and via artistic-scientific methods. Rosie is also working with the organisation wurmsystems (wurmkiste) on a project supported by the Action for Sustainability Hub in which the first five worm hotels in Vienna are being established, her role is to collaborate on the artistic process within this multispecies project aimed at redefining waste.
